Kojic Acid Soap Review

Kojic acid is a natural acid that is primarily used for lightening skin pigmentation. It is an effective, safer alternative to hydroquinone. The ingredient is obtained from mushrooms that are native to Japan and is a by-product of the fermentation process used to produce the alcoholic beverage 'SAKE'.

This soap is great at exfoliating, it leaves your skin feeling super clean, it smells great! However, it finishes really fasts and leaves an orange stain in your bathroom, so be careful. In terms of lightening dark marks, I’d definitely say that this soap, after 3 months of using it, helped in fading some superficial dark marks and tan from spending too much time in the sun. On Asian skin, this soap works wonders and can “lighten” one up to 2 shades or more, as well as treat pimples; but on black skin it helps fade discoloration. To maximize the effect on the soap, it is best to lather up the soap, apply on the body and leave it on for 5 minutes, then rinse off.

To understand kojic acid's effects, it is necessary to understand how the skin gets it color. The body naturally produces a pigment known as 'Melanin' through specialized cells known as 'Melanocytes'. A person's genes determine how much melanin the body naturally produces. In people with fair skin, only small amounts of melanin are manufactured by the melanocytes, while copious amounts of the pigment are made by the cells of those with dark complexions.

Many products designed for lightening the skin have a very short shelf life because they really aren’t all that stable. Products that contain kojic acid generally have a much longer shelf life because kojic acid resists oxidation and spoilage.

Since many producers of skin lightening products sell treatments for fairly long periods of time, buying one with kojic acid just makes more sense. If you have to use a skin lightening treatment for six months, you don’t want the product to go bad or stop being effective halfway through. Kojic acid won’t do that because it’s very stable.
